When my daughter, Lilly, was a young girl she had a love affair with the tooth fairy.  She was obsessed with communicating with the fairy and would leave elaborate drawings and messages for the fairy every time she lost a tooth. She once orchestrated a meeting of the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny by saving her tooth until Easter eve and then leaving her tooth and instructions for the tooth fairy to go to the living room and talk with the Easter Bunny.

Of course, I was the Tooth Fairy and I loved the fantasy and play as much as she did. The fairy left a trail of fairy dust (glitter) along the window sill and across the dresser leading to under Lilly’s pillow.  Lilly’s letters included many questions about what it is like to live in the fairy world. The fairy always left either a letter, a small gift or drawing along with a shiny Susan B. Anthony dollar.

We have a box in the closet with all of the letters, teeth and small gifts from that time. It’s like a time capsule of Lilly’s imaginative childhood.
